A guide to library databases regarding accessibility

Adobe Acrobat Read Aloud

While many databases contain built in text-to-speech software, unfortunately some materials cannot be read aloud using database features. If available, you can download a PDF of the material you would like read aloud. Adobe Acrobat is equipped with a Read Aloud function.

Below is an example of a PDF downloaded from JSTOR. Once you have downloaded your material, look for the Headphones icon in the top right-hand corner.

After selecting the Headphones icon, the article will be read aloud. As the article is read aloud, text is highlighted in grey to indicate what is being read.

The speed can be changed.

The accent and speaking language may also be changed in the Voice Options drop-down menu. Select your preferred English accent or language from the drop-down menu.
