Find Background Information

Consider using encyclopedias and other reference sources when you begin researching a topic. Some encyclopedias will provide more in-depth information than others, but any general encyclopedia is a good source to consult for background information of your chosen subject area. Most encyclopedias provide:

Main concepts, including names, dates, places
Keywords and subject terms related to topic
Lists of related articles or additional resources

A starting point for research and learning that offers unlimited access to hundreds of full text reference books on every subject. Includes encyclopedias, dictionaries, thesauri and books of quotations.
Oxford Reference Online This link opens in a new window
Contains over 100 dictionary, language reference, and subject reference works published by Oxford University Press. Also includes the Oxford Companions Series.

If you need a source the library does not have, use the following tools to get it:

Interlibrary Loan
Request books and articles that the library does not have.
Google Books
Scanned sections of books. Useful for deciding if you want to request a book through ILL, or starting to read while you're waiting for an ILL to arrive.
Internet Archive - Texts
Free online texts. To access some items, you will need to create a free account.
EndNote Click (formerly Kopernio)
EndNote Click is a free browser plugin that works in your browser to get you a copy of open access articles you need.
Use a Citation to Find Full Text
Instructions for deconstructing a citation and using OneSearch to search for full text. Great for finding articles and avoiding paywalls.
