What is Information Literacy?

The Association of College & Research Libraries (ACRL) defines Information Literacy as:

"the set of integrated abilities encompassing the reflective discovery of information, the understanding of how information is produced and valued, and the use of information in creating new knowledge and participating ethically in communities of learning." (2016)

Information Literacy Support

The duPont-Ball Library provides the following services to support information literacy learning and research assignments in your classes. For more information or to schedule one of these services, contact David Ireland at direland@stetson.edu or 386-822-7176. Please schedule at least one week in advance.

Please note: Information Literacy Instruction is intended for courses with an assignment that incorporates an information literacy or research component or courses with a relevant learning outcome (FSEM, JSEM, writing-enhanced, senior capstone).

Library Instruction
Request a librarian-led presentation or workshop tailored to your class and assignment. Typically, this takes one entire class period. Please allow 1 week notice so we may prepare for the session.
Librarian Introduction
Request a 10-minute librarian visit to your class that will include a general introduction to duPont-Ball Library services. This does not include time for hands-on activities.
Course Research Guide
Request an online course research guide that highlights the most appropriate information resources & search strategies for your assignment. To see examples, click on the link above, then Course Guides.
Student Research Consultations
If you'd like for your students to meet with librarians for one-on-one individualized research guidance, they can fill out this form to schedule an appointment.
Learn to use Archives
The Archives offers instruction session on primary sources, as well a archival theory and practice. Contact Beth Maycumber, emaycumber@stetson.edu
Faculty Assignment Consultations
We'll help you make sure that your assignment takes advantage of the information resources your students have access to. We can also help you determine which resources are most useful for your assignments and prepare to instruct students in using them yourself.
Something Else
Our goal is to work with you to make sure students have the information literacy knowledge and skills they need to succeed during and after their time at Stetson. If you have an idea of some other way we can help you do that, let us know!

Consider adding the following resources to your syllabus, assignment descriptions, or link to them in your Canvas course site. Here is a sample block of text that you are welcome to copy and paste into your syllabus:

Research librarians at the duPont-Ball Library are available to help you with all of your information needs, such as choosing a topic, using databases, finding sources, evaluating sources, and formatting citations. A librarian is “on-call” and ready to help during the following hours: Monday-Thursday 10 AM-9 PM, , Friday 10 AM-5 PM, Saturday 11 AM-6 PM, and Sunday 1 PM-9 PM.
