Table of Contents (ToC) Alerts
Table of Contents (ToC) alerts are notifications that let you know when new journal issues have been published. ToC Services are usually provided by a particular publisher (e.g. Alexander Street Press, Sage, University of Chicago Press). There are also initiatives like
JournalToCs that allow users to set up notifications for several different journals in one place.
Citation Alerts
Publishers and databases may have the option to set up alerts for when a user cites a specific article. This is a good option for researchers or faculty that would like to be notified when their work is cited.
Search Result Alerts
Search or subject alerts will notify you when new results are available for a given subject, topic, or set of keywords. This alert option is common amongst databases, where users rely heavily on the search feature.
Other Alerts
Every publisher and database differs in the types of alert options they offer. For example, Sage provides Announcement Alerts, which will notify you with "special journal news or related events." ProQuest's Dissertation Abstracts database allows you to set up alerts for specific institutions or authors.
