Canvas and Library Integrations

This research guide has instructions about various tools that are integrated between the duPont-Ball Library and Stetson's learning management system, Canvas. This guide also features answers to some frequently asked questions by students and faculty.

Welcome

Permalinks & Proxy

Persistent links are sometimes called permalinks, permanent links, or PURLs (Persistent Universal Resource Locators). While persistent links are said to be permanent, they can change so it is wise to also include some citation information. Faculty should keep in mind that when clicking on a persistent link from off campus, students will be required to log in with their Stetson credentials. The prompt for logging in with their Stetson credentials is triggered by using the proxy prefix (described below).

Databases use different names for permalinks. For example:

  • EBSCO = permalink
  • ProQuest = (a link symbol) permalink icon
  • JSTOR = Stable URLs

About Proxy

Permission to access subscription library databases is determined by your computer's IP address. The IP address range for computers on-campus (including AirOrange) has been registered with our database vendors, allowing access on-campus without using an Stetson University username.

For off campus access, a proxy server prefix must be added to the front of each URL. This prefix routes your connection to that URL through the Stetson University proxy server, and after entering your username and password, it authenticates your computer as part of the Stetson University community.

How to prepend the proxy server information? Simply copy and paste this prefix to the front of the original URL. https://stetson.idm.oclc.org/login?url=

  • Examples:
    • https://stetson.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https://stetson.naxosmusiclibrary.com/streama.asp?s=dkBlWllVGgcCfktn

Links to Databases

Frequently, faculty may wish to point students directly to a specific database or journal for homework or a research project.

  • You can provide direct links in Canvas or course materials to the duPont-Ball Library databases like Academic Search Complete, PsycInfo, Business Source Premier, etc. This enables students to reach a specific resource with one click. If the student is accessing your link from off campus, they will be prompted to enter their Stetson credentials to access the database.
  • From our A-Z listing of databases, right click on the title of the database.
  • Select "Copy Link" (Firefox), and paste the link where you need to. For Google Chrome, select "Copy link address," and for Safari, select "Copy link."

Links in EBSCO databases

Use permalinks in EBSCO databases. The URL in the address bar is built in a way that is impermanent, so do not use that link.

Look for permalink under Tools:

academic search complete result

Copy the link that appears above the title:

Locating Links in ProQuest Research Databases

ProQuest Research Databases include ABI/Inform, Historical Newspapers, ProQuest Complete, and more.

Stable links are included under All Options.

Copy the link at the top of the box.

Stable links in JSTOR

JSTOR provides Stable URLs but they do not include the library's proxy information.
