Welcome to the research guide for ENGL 342V2-JS: Literature and Medicine and for medical humanities topics in any course!
This guide describes databases and search tools that you can use to find primary and secondary sources on literature topics at the duPont-Ball Library and on the web, as well as search tips and information about library services.
If your PWP requires research--for background in a more creative piece or to substantiate your argument in a more conventional researched essay, consider these websites with links to valuable resources.Note that you can search beyond these selected sites using such general terms as “medical humanities” and “literature and medicine” in the Library’s OneSearch or Google Scholar. (When you use Google Scholar, sign in to Stetson first so you’ll see availability of items in our Library.)
Universities with strong medical schools or health professional programs will often have valuable information you can access, including graduate programs (in narrative medicine at Columbia U., for instance), courses, journals, or library guides. Here’s a great library resource at Rutgers University:
Remember the ABCs of evaluation: Accuracy Authority Bias Currency Comprehension | |
---|---|
Accuracy | Does the site provide references to scientific literature? (popular media doesn’t count) |
Authority | Is the information from a credible source? (check the About Us section and the site’s domain) |
Bias | Who pays for the site? Are ads/sponsored content clearly labeled? |
Currency | Are there dates on the material? (under 5 yrs) |
Comprehension | Is the information understandable and the site easy to navigate? |
