IL Program structures

After decades of IL instruction programs, libraries are still struggling with

  • library staffing issues
  • access to students
  • limited class time -- the one-shot session
  • focus on 1st year or core curriculum courses

Benefits of Train-the-Trainer Approach

Training disciplinary faculty to teach IL concepts and skills has the potential to

  • reach more students
  • span the curriculum
  • introduce and reinforce disciplinary IL skills

Train-the-Trainer Implementation Approaches

Librarians have led initiatives to recruit disciplinary faculty to participate in IL course redesign programs such as

  • Re-accreditation QEPs focused on training faculty to incorporate IL in courses. (Smith; Millet, Donald, & Wilson)
  • Grants to fund faculty to redesign a course or unit. (Folk & Hammons; Winterman, Donovan, & Slough)
