Music History

Historical Chronology

One of the first steps in making sense of history is understanding the measurement or sequencing of time. The units and concepts that make up time are important to your understanding of events.

Check out the tabs below for easy translations of years to centuries and a break down of time periods.

Time Translated

To talk about large sections of time, years are grouped together in the following way:

Decade 10 Years
Century 100 Years
Millennium 1000 Years

In your research, sometimes you will see years and centuries used interchangeably. It can be confusing to determine what century is being referenced when it is written like this: 1600s, 1700s, 1800s, etc. Use this chart to figure it out!
